Ergonomic and Pregnancy Risk Assessments
Occuhealth is here to help with your ergonomic questions about maintaining a safe work environment and to help prevent disabling conditions or aggravation of existing conditions. Occuhealth can also help your organisation to comply with legislation by providing Pregnancy Risk assessments.

The first step is to schedule an appointment with one of our ergonomics specialists. Our specialist will visit your organisation to assess your needs. The specialist will evaluate your work setup and watch you perform regular work activities. The ergonomics specialist will point out strength and trouble areas of your work habits.

When Should An Ergonomic Assessment Be Scheduled?
If you are experiencing any pain or discomfort while working at your computer workstation, or performing any other daily job functions, notify your supervisor and have him/her contact Occuhealth. A representative from Occuhealth will make contact to schedule the time and date of the ergonomic assessment. In addition, you should consult your personal physician to obtain a medical opinion.

When Should A Pregnancy Risk Assessment Be Scheduled?
Once the pregnant employee notifies her employer that she is pregnant an assessment can be scheduled.

What Does an Ergonomic Assessment Entail?
An ergonomic assessment usually consists of a question and answer period, during which, some basic questions about how much time is spent performing the problematic job function (working at your computer, lifting objects, opening boxes, pulling a book cart, etc.) and any pain or discomfort you are experiencing is discussed. The discussion is followed by a hands-on evaluation of the activity that is causing the problem.

Assessment Report
Following the ergonomic assessment, Occuhealth will generate a report based on the findings of the evaluation. The report will provide any necessary recommendations to eliminate or mitigate the ergonomic problem. These recommendations may include, but are not limited to, the procurement of new ergonomically correct equipment or changes in work practices.

Responsibility
It will be the employee's supervisors responsibility to insure that the recommended equipment is procured, installed, adjusted in a timely manner. Occuhealth can provide guidance in the selection of the ergonomic equipment. Occuhealth can also provide a follow up visit to insure that the new equipment has been installed and adjusted properly, or to insure that new work practices have been successfully implemented.

It will be the responsibility of the employee's supervisor to ensure that the assessment report is provided to the employee in a timely manner. If the employee has any questions regarding the assessment report, it will be the employees supervisor responsibility to insure that Occuhealth is contacted to answer the question. Contact us now. We're here to help you.

Individualised Pregnancy Risk Assessments

Pregnancy increases risks at work so a Pregnancy Risk Assessment should be carried out when the employer has been informed that an employee is pregnant. All employers must provide a safe and healthy working environment. During pregnancy there is extra protection available in the workplace therefore it is imperative that the employer is informed at an early stage.

What is involved in a Pregnancy Risk assessment?
Occuhealth can provide the solution by carrying out a risk assessment of the employee's job role to find any possible risks to the employee and her unborn child.
These risks might be caused by:

  • standing or sitting for long periods
  • any shock or vibration
  • any work in confined spaces
  • manual handling
  • exposure to toxic substances, chemical or biological agents
  • exposure to high pressure, stress, heat or cold
  • ionising radiation
  • long working hours or excess traveling
  • work at heights
  • work related violence

It may be necessary to review the individual risk assessment as the woman's pregnancy develops. Where possible, any risks should be removed or the woman's responsibilities should be changed. Occuhealth will provide a confidential written report which will be issued to both the employee and her employer identifying the possible risks and the appropriate actions to be considered and implemented.
